After the controversial Antichrist Lars Von Trier is following up with the psychological disaster film, Melancholia. It was rumored that Penelope Cruz would lead, but now Deadline confirms she chose Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides instead. They also report Kirsten Dunst will now lead along with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgaard and Udo Kier.
The $5 million dollar budget film is in reference to “Planet Melancholia, an enormous planet that evidently looms threateningly close to Earth.” Last October we reported Von Trier saying the film will “have no more happy endings.”
Melancholia will shoot July through September in Southern Sweden for a premiere at Cannes 2011.
