/Film reports director John Woo (Mission Impossible 2, Hard Boiled) held a press conference to announce production on the most expensive Chinese film to date. Half of the £100 million funds are set to be coming from the US and the film will feature a mix of ‘Hollywood’ and Chinese movie stars.

Brendon Connelly explains The Flying Tigers, more officially known as The 1st American Volunteer Group, flew missions against the Japanese in World War 2. They apparently destroyed 300 enemy aircraft while suffering only 14 casualties, for which they were paid a bonus which might, technically, make them mercenaries.

The film has a working title of Flying Tiger Heroes, and Woo promises “the most spectacular aerial battle scenes ever seen in Chinese cinema”.

Woo goes on to say:

This is an extremely important production. Currently, basic preparations for shooting work have already been made and in a month we’ll confirm the script. This Yunnan-themed film emphasizes China-US friendship and the contributions of the Flying Tigers and the people of Yunnan during the War of Resistance.

This is looking to be epic. I didn’t really like Woo’s take on war in Windtalkers, but this project seems completely different. I’m looking forward to see if he can deliver on his promise.

What do you think about John Woo‘s upcoming project?
