Besides Matthew McConaughey, few other actors have shown such a dedication in choosing demanding, interesting roles as of late — that is, except for Jake Gyllenhaal. With his Denis Villeneuve double feature and slimmed-down performance for this fall’s Nightcrawler, his next role will be far different for the actor.

Once rumored for Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and even Eminem, Antoine Fuqua went with Gyllenhaal for his boxing drama Southpaw, and now the first image has arrived today. Coming from a screenplay by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, the film follows a lefthanded prizefighter who wins a title but then suffers a tragedy and must put the pieces together to earn the respect of his young daughter. Check out Gyllenhaal’s transformation below for the film likely arriving next fall, along with a 35-minute interview featuring the actor discussing his latest roles.
