2014’s Godzilla was a spectacular achievement in terms of bringing scale and stakes to the summer blockbuster. For the follow-up, Gareth Edwards’ eye will be missed, but Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus director Michael Dougherty has stepped in behind the camera and looks to be enacting more massive-scale carnage by upping the monster count.

Leading up to Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong movie in 2020, Godzilla: King of the Monsters finds Godzilla in a warm-up match of sorts, going against Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah. After debuting at Comic-Con 2018, the operatic first trailer has now made its way online, which captures an Earth in decline and the only creature that can save the day coming to the rescue.

Starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ken Watanabe, and Zhang Ziyi, see the trailer below.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
