Last week we got the news that things were moving fast for the next work from David Fincher, following his The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo adaptation and involvement in Netflix’s hit show House of Cards. Once again set to adapt a hit crime novel, The Social Network helmer is taking on Gillian Flynn‘s Gone Girl and with a male lead set, he’s looking towards who will fill in the female lead role.

After rumors of Natalie Portman, Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron, The Hollywood Reporter indicate those were off course and that Fincher has his sights set on Rosamund Pike. Last seen in Jack Reacher and the upcoming, much-anticipated trilogy closer for Edgar Wright, The World’s End, the actress would take the role of Amy Dunne, who disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary with Nick, played by Ben Affleck (who has signed on the dotted line for the role).

We can’t imagine Pike would turn down an offer from Fincher, so if talks indeed go through, it would easily be the actress’ most substantial role yet. In the story, as evidence piles up, Affleck’s character is being targeted as the kidnapper, but much more is in play that the public is not privy to.

THR also claims that Fincher’s chances of directing the Dragon Tattoo sequel are nearly non-existent and Gone Girl will be much more modestly budgeted than that $90 million adaptation, with Fincher not getting “free rein” this time around. Produced by 20th Century Fox and New Regency, shooting begins this September for a likely 2014 release and check back for confirmation on Pike’s involvement and more casting news.

Could you see Pike in the lead role? Are you upset Fincher won’t have a chance at the Dragon Tattoo follow-up?
