In case those reading this aren’t tired of the slew of graphic novel/comic book adaptations happening in Hollywood (one would assume that if you’re reading you are, in fact, not tired of it) then get excited. Sarcasm aside, actually get excited, because Cowboys and Aliens looks to be one of the more promising studio comic book adaptations getting made right now. Don’t believe me? Keep reading.

Dreamworks has released the official plot synopsis for the next Jon Favreau film, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford (that second name still makes me really happy to type):

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival. [/Film]

Um, whoa. Alright then. Let’s re-cap shall we? A town called Absolution, Craig as the reluctant hero, Ford as the “iron-fisted” baddie, and aliens and Apaches as side characters? And also Olivia Wilde as the eye candy? (on a side note, one wonders when a woman will get a meaty role in the comic book/film world. That’s for another, longer feature I suppose).

Potential misogyny aside, I’m in. Just don’t over pack it with gobbly-gook a la Iron Man 2. Hopefully the hire of scribe Damon Lindelof (Lost)/and Spielberg’s Dreamworks banner will insure that.

Are you excited for Comboys and Aliens? More so now with the plot synopsis revealed?
