But who will play the giant killer? Apparently director Bryan Singer wants Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson, but it’s far from a done deal. Several young up-and-comers are auditioning/being considered. The script comes courtesy of Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After) and Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Unstoppable).

This film has been in development for some time, and almost drowned when Singer considered returning to the X-Men franchise with First Class (which Matthew Vaughn is now directing). Singer is still on as a producer for Vaughn’s film, and is now set to take on Giant Killer, a remake of the 1962 Nathan Juran film starring Kerwin Mathews and Judi Meredith.

Recalling the fantasy tale from my childhood, Johnson seems the perfect fit for the Link from Zelda-like character that is Jack, and with today’s special effects this remake makes as much as the Clash of the Titans remake did – that is, of course, until it came out. One imagines Singer will do better by this property.

Do you remember “Jack and the Beanstalk?”Excited for a dark version of the storytale?
