Antonio Banderas will write, direct, and star in his upcoming Boabdil biopic. Screendaily [via The Playlist] is reporting that Banderas will play the role of the General Gonzalo de Cordobo, the man who captured the island of Granada for Christians. Boabdil, otherwise known as Abu’abd-Allah Muhammad XII (the last Muslim ruler of Granada), and the subject of the film has not yet been cast.

Banderas will also produce the flick through his own Green Moon Company. Antonio Soler will co-write. Filming will begin in 2012 in Andalucia. There are also rumors that he is having trouble finding financial backing given the apparent ambition of the film and his lack of directorial experience.

It does appear, with Banderas taking over so much responsibility for this flick, that he is committed and wants to see it succeed. Let’s hope he can find some money to do it justice.

Who should star? Is anyone familiar with this story?
