The rumor has been around for years. The idea has been in minds for almost a decade. And in two months it’s supposed to start filming. The Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges movie is a hope or a dread, depending on how important Moe, Larry, and Curly have been in your life and childhood. Some people can’t wait to see the flick while others hate the idea of it. But since 20th century Fox took it over from MGM and we now finally have an official shooting date of the flick, March 14th, 2011. It’s finally fully becoming a reality. Some aspects of the film that we still aren’t too sure of is the casting. Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro, were set to play Curly, Larry, and Moe, but Carrey and Penn walked out and Del Toro’s status is still unknown. But today, the film news gods may have something for our ears.

The Wrap reports that Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg have been shortlisted to be in the movie. And since shooting is so close it seems like some cast has to be confirmed in the near future. Although, there is one other person in the mix and he is not someone we’re too familiar with. His name is Shane Jacobson and he is known in the Australian comedy world, but still blind to the US of A. Apparently he has been shortlisted along with Samberg and Knoxville to be part of the main trio.

Now although we’re not sure who’s playing what parts, this does give very big insight into which direction the Farrely brothers are heading with this film. When the Penn, Carrey, and Del Toro rumors were floating around it could have seemed much more serious but now with these comedy heavy hitters maybe coming on board, it looks like attempt at laughter will be one of the main themes here. Knoxville worked with the Farrelly brothers on the The Ringer with them being the head producers and Samberg is part of the head cast on Saturday Night Live, leading the viral video market with his comedic rap crew The Lonely Island. The only question here is if Jacobson, the current host of Top Gear Australia can keep up with these comdeic icons here in America.

As we previously printed the story will be and actual movie based on the Three Stooges TV series and not an actual biopic. So excpet some attempt at slap stick comedy and wacky characters. The plot, reported by Deadline earlier, is:

The picture takes place when the trio are dumped out as newborns at the door of an orphanage, and they are talking with Richard Jenkins to play the head nun who is terrorized by the precocious Stooges. The comedy follows them to adulthood and is very much in the spirit of the original shorts, in which the blue collar bumblers got the best of the wealthy society matrons that tried to exploit them.

The films is set to be released in three different 27 minute segments and come stamped with a family friendly PG rating. The Farrelly brothers are going on press rounds soon for their upcoming flick “Hall Pass” and I’m sure they can excpect lots of questions and interest about The Stooges movie on the interviews. There should be more news coming out soon on this film and we’ll be sure to keep you all updated.

Do you think Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg would make good “Stooges”? Are you excited for the movie?
