“I did rewatch The 10 Commandments,” Christian Bale recently said when it comes to preparing for Exodus: Gods and Kings. “But you can’t out-Heston Charlton Heston. There’s no point in trying to do that.” Indeed, Ridley Scott‘s Moses epic looks far different than the aforementioned film, which marks the director’s biggest production yet.

The first full-length trailer has now landed, which builds up the story pitting Bales’ Moses versus Joel Edgerton‘s Ramses before showcasing the epic-looking visuals as the plagues reign down. Ahead of a release later this year, check out the new trailer below for the film also starring Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro, and Aaron Paul.

From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

Exodus: Gods and Kings arrives on December 12th.
