Rio held strong in its second weekend, earning a cool $26.8 million, just ahead of second place. It has now grossed $81 million. In second was Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family earning its regular take of $25.7 million in its opening weekend. I expected the higher profile Water For Elephants to fill this spot, but it stumbled out of the gates, finishing third with only $17.5 million.

Hop continued on a strong run, with another $12.4 million from the Easter crowd, charting a 4-week $100 million total. Meanwhile African Cats drew the Earth Day crowd to the tune of $6.4 million, not too shabby for a documentary.

Another documentary out this weekend was Morgan Spurlock‘s POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold which netted $135,000 from 18 theaters.

Coming up next week, the fifth installment of The Fast and the Furious series, known succinctly as Fast Five and it looks to be the big performer. It will go up against Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil which may get a decent take from the family crowds. Disney’s Prom should do relatively well with the tween crowd. Opening in 5 theaters is Werner Herzog‘s newest doc, Cave of Forgotten Dreams.
