Jay Roach, the director of such comedy hits as Austin Powers and Meet the Parents, has packaged a political comedy pairing two of Hollywood’s favorite funnymen: Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Last week Roach, whose 2008 HBO political comedy Recount garnered rave reviews and snagged a series of awards, was pitching his latest project around Hollywood. Now, Deadline reports the scathing comedy, which will center on the oncoming 2012 presidential election, has been bought by Warner Bros.

Ferrell, who mastered president-mockery with his Broadway show You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush, and Galifianakis, whose arguably the most talked about comic of 2010, will play rival candidates in the comedy penned by Chris Henchy (The Other Guys) and Shawn Harwell (Eastbound and Down).

With such a pedigree of subversive humorists on board, the untitled political comedy seems guaranteed to be smart and wickedly funny.
