If you, like me, revel in the random bit of animal-related tales of hope that sometimes hit the news page, you may remember the story of Winter, an Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin who lost her tail after a gruesome confrontation with a crab trap. Not long after rescuers found the two-month-old tail-less marine mammal struggling off the coast of Florida, Winter was sent to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where a team of experts cared for the ailing dolphin, and tried to help her adapt to swimming sans tail. When her caretakers feared her lack of progress would endanger her health, they decided to create a prosthetic tail for Winter, and brought in an expert on prosthetic who’d previously created limbs for people, dogs, and even an ostrich. After some tribulations in the design process, Winter was presented with an artificial tail, and now swims with ease. It’s a touching story that has proved popular enough to inspire it’s own movie.
