Gearing up for the release of his dark comedy, Super, James Gunn has giddily released a kitschy trailer:

This promo promises a subversively lithe comedy, and with its quotable dialogue (“Shut up, crime!”) and quirky animated cutaways aims to appeal to those who flocked to indie oddball narratives like Juno and Napoleon Dynamite. However, the actual movie is not as deftly fun as its trailer. (You can read our TIFF review here.) Some are saying this twisted superhero tale is destined to be as adored a cult hit as Gunn’s Tromeo and Juliet. That’s more the crowd who is likely to love this underdog tale of vigilantes running amok.

Plot Synopsis:

After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills.

Super hits theaters April, 1, 2011.
