Sony has viewed screen tests of all the serious contenders in the frame to replace Tobey Maguire in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, with a decision on who will finally don the web-slinger’s red-and-blue lyrca expected shortly. [Deadline]

Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) is helming the project and several names have been linked to the role previously. According to sources, the definitive list of potentials whose screen tests have been viewed are Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott, Tintin), Andrew Garfield (Dr. Parnassus, The Social Network), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince), Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro), Michael Angerano (Lords of Dogtown) and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass).

Of the new names in that list, Johnson is the one to me which stands out the most. Having, in all effect, played an edgier version of Peter Parker for Kick-Ass, Johnson showed he could portray the vulnerable everyman required with aplomb and, at 20-years-old, is an ideal age for a long-lasting franchise. Should Sony decide to go with a fresher approach, my own personal choice would be Yelchin, who has proved he can handle much-loved characters in high-profile reboots twice before.

With production due to start before the end of the year, we should expect an official announcement sooner rather than later.

Who do you think should be Spider-man?
