Her? Arrested Development, Parenthood, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World star Mae Whitman is lined up to lead the “indie coming-of-age drama” The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Variety reports. She will join Percy Jackson himself, Logan Lerman, and Emma Watson in her second post-Harry Potter role after My Week with Marilyn comes out later this year.
Stephen Chbosky, who wrote the 1999 novel, will direct himself. His acclaimed book “follows a shy and unpopular high school student who writes a series of letters to an anonymous penpal. Book gained attention for its mature exploration of the awkward times of adolescence.” Whitman joins the film as Mary Elizabeth, “a tattooed vegetarian who acts as the protagonist’s first girlfriend.”
With Arrested Development being my all-time favorite show, it is nice to see Whitman become a rising star. Add in being one of the only people on this planet that thought Percy Jackson was a fun time, it will be interesting to see Lerman match up with someone from the dueling franchise, Harry Potter.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower starts shooting this May in Pittsburgh (which also just got Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises for 4-6 weeks) and expect a 2012 release.
What do you think about Whitman joining the cast?
