Director adored by fanboys/girls everywhere, Sami Raimi, is currently producing a new alien attack action flick alongside District 9 producer, Bill Block. The film is tentatively titled EDF – as in Earth Defense Force, but First Showing assures us it has nothing to do with the similarly dubbed video game.

Instead, Vulture, who snagged a draft of the Andrew Marlowe (Hollow Man) script, claims this sci-fi thriller will be Top Gun meets Independence Day with “a pinch of The Last Starfighter.” So basically, it sounds like a good time. But what’s it about?

Vulture breaks it down:

“In EDF, we open on a U.S. military operation gone awry: Sent to rescue what they believe is a sub that’s accidentally bumped into a mine in Chinese waters, U.S. naval aviators quickly wind up engaged in a dogfight with a squadron of Chinese air force pilots. Soon, planes on both sides are being shot out of the sky, but not by the Chinese or U.S. pilots — by three alien attack fighters, which soon depart and destroy many of the world’s landmarks and military installations, then vanish. It’s a test of Earth’s defensive capabilities, and we failed. Shortly after, NASA detects a radiation signature in a nearby galaxy, indicating a far more massive attack coming in about ten months, and world leaders set about trying to create super-aircraft and weapons that can fight off the coming invasion.”

The good news is the plot sounds exciting. The bad news is it looks like Raimi will only serve as producer on the project. He and Block will be shopping for directors in the near future. Raimi is still set start shooting next year the Wizard of Oz revamp, ostentatiously titled Disney’s Oz, the Great and Powerful.
