Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.
Museum of the Moving Image
Howard Hawks mania continues with Only Angels Have Wings and I Was a Male War Bride on Saturday (9/14). The silents take over Sunday (9/15), when Paid to Love, Trent’s Last Case (his last picture made in the format), and the Louise Brooks-starring A Girl in Every Port play. All are on film.
Not to be completely outdone, their other running series, “See It Big!,” is continuing with 35mm presentations of Terry Gilliam‘s 12 Monkeys and Chris Marker‘s La Jetée, to be seen this Friday (9/13). On Saturday (9/14), Singin’ in the Rain plays, according to their site, on an “IB Technicolor print from [the] George Eastman House.”
Film Forum
A new restoration of Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme‘s Le Joli Mai begins a week-long run.
Contempt continues for this, its final weekend.
On Sunday morning (9/15), a 35mm print of Journey to the Center of the Earth will be screening.
BAMCinématek
It’s all about skateboarding at BAM, as “Skateboarding is Not a Crime” continues with This Ain’t California and Dragonslayer playing on Friday (9/13). The classic documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys will make a 35mm appearance this Saturday (9/14), followed by The Motivation; on Sunday (9/15), Bones Brigade: An Autobiography and Waiting for Lightning are expected to screen.
IFC Center
The Coen brothers’ debut, Blood Simple, is playing Friday and Saturday (9/13, 9/14) at midnight, alongside Fight Club.
Throughout the weekend, some 12 hours earlier, one can enjoy James L. Brooks‘ Terms of Endearment.
Nitehawk Cinema
Terminator 2: Judgement Day comes around for midnight screenings this Friday and Saturday (9/13, 9/14) as part of “Find the Time,” while, in the same slots, Foxy Brown — complete with a live musical accompaniment from Morricone Youth — is available. Continuing “Find the Time” (while kicking off “The Works — Terry Gilliam”) this Saturday and Sunday (9/15) is Time Bandits, screening on 35mm; those days, This is England will play, brunch included.
Landmark Sunshine
A little-known trifle, Casablanca, has midnight engagements scheduled for Friday and Saturday (9/13, 9/14).
Film Society of Lincoln Center
Offering some competition for Film Forum’s Journey, Saturday and Sunday morning (9/14, 9/15) bring a 35mm showing of The Incredible Shrinking Man.
