Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.
Museum of the Moving Image
“See It Big! Jack Fisk” celebrates one of cinema’s greatest production designers. The first weekend brings four Malick features, Mulholland Dr., Carrie, and There Will Be Blood.
A collection of the Muppets‘ appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson will be presented this Sunday.
A retrospective of the great Jean Eustache brings his masterpiece The Mother and the Whore on Friday and Saturday (actress Françoise Lebrun will be present at the latter), the acclaimed My Little Loves the same days, Godard‘s Masculin Féminin this Saturday and Sunday, and several others. Almost all titles are on film.
A new 35mm print of Stephanie Rothman‘s unsung classic The Student Nurses will screen this weekend.

The long-awaited restoration of Edward Yang‘s A Brighter Summer Day is being given a weeekend-long run.

“Golden Days: The Films of Arnaud Desplechin” highlights the career of one of our greatest living filmmakers. Several great films play this weekend, including My Sex Life, Esther Kahn, A Christmas Tale, and Kings and Queen.
IFC Center
The restoration of Kelly Reichardt‘s debut feature River of Grass begins a run, screening as a double-feature with Joseph H. Lewis‘ Gun Crazy on Friday, Badlands on Saturday, and a print of Breathless this Sunday.
The Wicker Man, Pulp Fiction, El Topo, and a print of Gremlins 2 play at or near midnight.
The Jerry Lewis-centered “The Kid Turns 90” brings several features, including The Bellboy on Friday and a The Errand Boy / Cracking Up double-feature this Sunday.

A 35mm print of 1920’s The Mark of Zorro will play with live musical accompaniment this Sunday.
