With the Oscars kicking off tomorrow night, we’re almost ready to close the book on the 2012 awards race, but before that ceremony, two major precursors recently concluded with the 28th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards and France’s version of the Oscars, the César Awards. The former ceremony saw a sweep for David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook, which is not necessarily a true beacon for independent film with its all-star cast, yet it picked up Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Female Lead.
In other major awards, Stephen Chbosky was awarded the Best First Feature for The Perks of Being a Wallflower (I guess no one at Film Independent saw his 1995 directorial debut The Four Corners of Nowhere), while John Hawkes secured Best Male Lead for The Sessions and Matthew McConaughey grabbed Best Supporting Male for Magic Mike. Michael Haneke also picked up Best International Film for Amour, which also won Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay at the Césars. Check out both rundowns below.
