Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next Film to Begin Production in February

Written by on November 12, 2019

Well, our day/week/month/year just got a whole lot better. Following up his incredible, endlessly rewatchable Phantom Thread, the next film from Paul Thomas Anderson has been unveiled.

THR reports the director’s currently untitled project will follow a high school student in the 1970s in San Fernando Valley. While not many more details are available just yet–as usual for the first announcement of a new PTA film–the drama will focus on the student who is also a successful child actor. Written, directed, and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson, casting is underway now for “a multitude of roles.”

Production is aiming to begin this February, which means there’s a chance we could see it before the end of next year if it follows a similar process as Phantom Thread, which began in January 2017 and was released 11 months later. PTA is, of course, no stranger to San Fernando Valley, having grown up around there and shot Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love in the area.

As we await more details on the film, which at first glance gives us some Honey Boy vibes, check out his latest project below. And listen to PTA’s conversation with Quentin Tarantino on Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood here.
