Now that Only God Forgives, once in his pipeline for a few years, is officially done and over with, Nicolas Winding Refn might be getting to some more proper work with another long-gestating project: I Walk with the Dead, a (potentially) Miami-set, Carey Mulligan-led horror picture that, two years ago, he had promised is “just going to have a lot of sex in it.” Intriguing, sure, but almost forgotten when the writer-director’s most recent Ryan Gosling-starrer became a subject of discussion, justifiably forcing notice of other projects aside for the time being.

But, now, Dead might finally have its day. According to a report in the London Evening Standard (via ThePlaylist), playwright Polly Stenham has been tapped for screenwriting duties on the picture, her hiring coming with a bit of good reason: Winding Refn admits that he doesn’t “know how to write [women],” and it’s with this female-centered title that he’d like to counter some misogynistic claims leveled against much of his work — and our curiosity is only heightened when she tells us to expect a movie that’s “going to have a bit of everything.”

Despite this latest step, however, there’s no indication that he and Mulligan will reunite immediately, what with some word that his next title is, possibly, The Avenging Silence — once described as a prequel to Valhalla Rising but, now, perhaps something a little different — and until a production deal of some sort becomes public news, we’ll have to wait. In the meantime, those who missed Only God Forgives — a film I’m ambivalently positive on, for better and for worse — can check out a Blu-ray release tomorrow. If nothing else, it might better prepare you for what’s next.

Do you hope to see Winding Refn and Mulligan partner once more, and has I Walk with the Dead sounded like a suitable option?
