This week marks the return of Paul Schrader, whose five-year absence has been absolved with his “post-theatrical” work The Canyons. While our review suggests there’s not a whole lot to get excited for, we recently got word on his next project, and one that will give him a much more substantial budget to work with.
Earlier this month we heard that Schrader was taking over a previous film he scripted for Nicolas Winding Refn, titled The Dying of the Light. The project would have potentially paired Harrison Ford and Channing Tatum together, but with this new incarnation they got “an A-actor” to take the lead place and now it’s finally been revealed who it is.
While attending The Canyons‘ premiere at Lincoln Center, Schrader gave a post-screening Q&A in which he let loose that Nicolas Cage will be leading the dark thriller centered on a CIA agent going blind on a final mission. With shooting set to kick off later this year thanks to The Wolf of Wall Street producers Red Granite (according to Roger Friedman), hopefully more details will follow on what would be a Bringing Out the Dead re-team for the duo.
Friedman also provides an update on the next potential film from Schrader’s Canyons star Lindsay Lohan. With Ben Affleck still working on developing his next Dennis Lehane adaptation Live By Night for a shoot later this year (after he stars in David Fincher‘s Gone Girl), word has come in that Lohan is close to signing on to supporting role. She’s looking at Emma, described as “the tough waitress with a heart of gold who gets involved with the two male leads,” but with no confirmation yet, return in the coming months as Affleck finalizes his cast.
