While studios are trying their hardest to get most of the industry to see eligible films every year thanks to various screenings and screeners, some filmmakers make it their priority to watch notable works as they arrive. One director that certainly falls into this category is Edgar Wright, who frequently shares his enthusiasm on Twitter and today we now have the full list of his favorite films of the year.

Like his favorites of 2013, this year includes a range of both tentpoles and independent features. He even notes to Esquire, who unveiled the list, that The One I Love, The Guest, Dear White People, Blue Ruin, Locke, Cheap Thrills, The Drop, Palo Alto, Obvious Child, and Skeleton Twins all almost made the cut.

When it comes to this official top 10, he names The Grand Budapest Hotel — which he says is “possibly [Wes Anderson‘s] best movie — as well as calling Whiplash “the best horror movie of 2014,” and after including Snowpiercer, reveals that he convinced Chris Evans to take the part. Also including Boyhood, Interstellar, Under the Skin, and more, check out the list below after a message from the director.

“We need to make more original movies and audiences would do well to support original movies, for the future of the medium. I tire of franchises, remakes, and endless sequels. All of the movies I [mention below] work great as standalone stories. More please.”

Birdman
Boyhood
Edge of Tomorrow
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Interstellar
The LEGO Movie
Nightcrawler
Snowpiercer
Under the Skin
Whiplash
