Potentially following in the footsteps of Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom), young writer/director Cary Fukunaga, after two critically-acclaimed efforts (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre), is looking to helm a sci-fi project. The filmmaker is in talks to direct Spaceless for Universal and one Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, Rango), who will act as producer.
The script is written by Jeff Vintar, a veteran scribe with only one film to his name (I, Robot). The writer tweeted the news over two months ago:
More good news as Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre/Jane Eyre) is in talks to direct my script SPACELESS for producer Gore Verbinski and Universal
There’s been nothing since, so any kind of confirmation has yet to come. The script concerns an assassin hunting someone in space while he struggles with the difference between what is real and what is not. Call it Insomnia in space, if you will [The Playlist].
Fukunaga has proven himself in both small, cultural drama and period drama, so sci-fi doesn’t seem so foreign, considering the man’s eclecticism. And let us not forget that Verbinski is one of the few studio directors that appears allowed to let burst his creative impulses without much of a restrain from those who write the checks. His name could help Fukunaga slip through the cracks and make something worth remembering.
Do you like Fukunaga’s work so far? Have you seen it?
