Although its story is currently one of success with another season of Community coming to Yahoo!, all wasn’t well with Dan Harmon‘s creation. After creating the show and producing three seasons, he was let go by NBC before being brought back on, and now a new documentary explores what he did in the interim.

We reviewed Harmontown back during SXSW, saying, it “not only provides a behind-the-scenes look at Harmon’s career to date, but it also gives a look at someone trying to do something genuine. More than anything, though, the documentary explores a side of Harmon that you might expect but nonetheless feel privileged to see. He becomes revealing and openly talks about his flaws. ”

Ahead of a release this fall, a new trailer has now dropped for the film which features Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Jason Sudeikis, and Joel McHale, among others. Check it out below.

A kindred spirit to nerds everywhere, writer-comedian Dan Harmon has achieved celebrity via the hit series “Community,” but cut his teeth writing for shows such as “The Sarah Silverman Program” and the Jack Black/Ben Stiller pilot “Heat Vision and Jack.” After being fired from his signature creation, Harmon hits the road with his popular podcast and performs live for his cult-like fan base across the country. Known for his wit, cynicism, and disarming vulnerability, HARMONTOWN finds Harmon bathed in the adoration of his fans as he confronts his personal demons and comes out on the other side.

From acclaimed filmmaker Neil Berkeley (BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING), and featuring past and present collaborators Sarah Silverman, Jack Black, Allison Brie, Joel McHale and many more, HARMONTOWN tells Harmon’s story with unabashed candor — showing his highs, his lows, and everything in-between.

Harmontown hits theaters and on VOD on October 3rd.
