The Dallas Buyer’s Club, a real-life drama that will be helmed by Jean-Marc Vallee (The Young Victoria) and adapted for the screen by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack, has landed a pair of stars in Matthew McConaughey and Hilary Swank. (Apparently, the screenplay has been floating around the industry for years. More on that here.)
Robbie Brenner, Rachel Rothman-Winter, and Nathan Ross are signed on as producers, and the film is currently being lobbied by Content Film to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. The film’s storyline is described as follows [The Hollywood Reporter]:
The film centers on Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician diagnosed with AIDS who began smuggling alternative drugs into the U.S. to help himself and other AIDS patients. His actions put him on a collision course with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which was bent on keeping the drugs out of the country.
After reminding audiences of his talents in this year’s well-received The Lincoln Lawyer, it may be the right time for McConaughey to gamble on a project of this dramatic nature. Swank, who went under-the-radar last year after giving another exceptional turn in Conviction, is certainly a reliable choice in a film such as this one — though her role is apparently small enough that it wasn’t even mentioned in the report’s brief synopsis.
What do you think about the casting for this project?
