With each passing day, the Amazon Studios-backed remake of Dario Argento’s essential horror masterpiece Suspiria is becoming less and less superfluous.
Helmed by Luca Guadagnino, whose romantic drama A Bigger Splash made waves this summer, the once seemingly unnecessary reimagining of the giallo staple gained further credibility when iconic Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton came aboard, soon followed by rising talent Dakota Johnson. Swinton and Johnson co-starred in Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash, making this Swinton’s third collaboration with the director (including I Am Love) and Johnson’s second.
Now, joining Swinton, Johnson, and Nymphomaniac star Mia Goth in the production is Chloë Grace Moretz, according to Variety. Her role is undisclosed at the moment, but Moretz is no stranger to horror remakes, as she also led 2010’s Let Me In and 2013’s Carrie.
Suspiria (Latin for “sighs”) tails a young American ballet dancer as she travels to Europe to attend a storied dance academy in Germany. Following a series of murders, the ballerina becomes entangled in the malevolent, supernatural entity (or entities) dwelling within the academy’s walls.
Scripted by David Kajganich (who also wrote Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash), production is scheduled to begin this month in Hungary and Italy for a likely 2017 release, which means the director will have two films next year with Call Me By Your Name, starring Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg, wrapping this summer.
