Illustrating the popular saying “no news is good news,” the first word in a long time on the possibility of a third Hellboy film, straight from the comic creator’s mouth, is that lauded director Guillermo del Toro is unlikely to be involved.
Hellboy is a comic book superhero created by writer/artist Mike Mignola. He is a demon who was brought to Earth by the Nazis, discovered by the Allied Forces, and put to work in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. He, his teammates, and his enemies were brought to life in film in recent years under the lauded direction of del Toro.
Fans of the two films, Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), widely consider del Toro a leading reason for the films’ success. His iconic creature design (also on display in Pan’s Labyrinth) fit right in with the world of Hellboy, and comic book fans were lucky to have had him.
Ron Perlman, who played Hellboy in both films, has expressed interest in coming back for a third installment, but according to Mignola, del Toro won’t be joining him. Mignola was at this week’s Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, and Dailyblam asked about the possibility of the director’s future involvement. His response:
“Last I heard he said he would not make it. Guillermo — who I love — in every interview there’s a new story on what his next movie is and he honestly believes he’s going to do all these things. But last I heard, he said ‘I’m never gonna get back to Hellboy. I’m not surprised because he won’t live long enough to do a tenth of the movies he’s told me he’s going to make.
“I can’t imagine him (Del Toro) making a Hellboy 3. He’s very enthusiastic and says he’s going to do all these things….ummm….he’s cute [laughed].”
The author then went on to emphasize that he will be focusing on the comics for the foreseeable future. There hasn’t been any other recent news regarding Hellboy III, but the fact that we’re talking about it now may be a sign of things to come. In the meantime, Guillermo del Toro will next direct his epic sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim, shooting this fall.
How can Hellboy sucessfully continue without Guillermo del Toro?
