After rumors earlier this fall, Deadline confirms that Gore Verbinski’s next film will be an update on the George W. Trendle‘s classic American television and radio show, The Lone Ranger. Johnny Depp is attached to play the sidekick Tonto. Disney is still trying to figure out “who’ll play The Lone Ranger.”  With Depp back, this will mark the duo’s fifth project together after Pirates 1-3 and the upcoming animation Rango.

Jonathan Mostow (Surrogates) and Mike Newell (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) were both once considered, but thankfully the project ended up in Verbinski’s hands. Longtime producing partner Jerry Bruckheimer will take the reins as well,  and if Depp commits, production may possibly may gear up after he finishes Dark Shadows with Tim Burton.

Were you a fan of the original series? Are you excited for this project?
