While you might have seen him in Black Mirror and Sicario, Daniel Kaluuya‘s true break-out can be witnessed this weekend as the lead of Jordan Peele‘s Get Out, which sports a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is exceeding box-office expectations. As for what’s next, he’ll be seen in Black Panther in early 2018, and now he’s just joined one of our most-anticipated upcoming films, Steve McQueen‘s crime drama Widows.
Based on the British television series, featuring a script co-written by Gone Girl‘s Gillian Flynn, Kaluuya joins Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and André Holland, Deadline reports. Following four widows who come together to finish a robbery after their crooked husbands are killed on the job, there’s no word yet who the Get Out Star plays, but perhaps it is one of the husbands.
Update: Liam Neeson will play Viola Davis’ husband in Widows, Variety reports.
“It’s a film about female solidarity and strength in numbers, so very timely,” Iain Canning, whose company See-Saw is producing. He also opened to Screen Daily about another McQueen project, the television series Codes of Conduct, which HBO had dropped after a limited six-episode series was ordered. Following an African-American man’s experience entering New York high society, it was thought to be dead, but Canning says they are “committed” to finding another network to bring it to screens. He says, “It’s a story that’s very important to Steve to tell and we’re very emotionally involved in it.”
Lastly, we have a round-up of some great, extensive talks with Get Out director Peele. “Part of the process was I realized I’ve sort of done enough thinking about race, enough work in the comedy space, walking that line of how to deal with race in art, that I was uniquely equipped to deal with it. Race in this country and in the world is this human demon. It is a monster that is in our DNA and I just realized if anyone was going to make a modern horror movie about race, it should be me,” Peele tells Variety, in a podcast below, in which he also reveals he has four other social thrillers in the works.
