Hot off the news that Zhang Yimou has lined yet another potential Hollywood debut, we’ve got the first look at footage for his latest project, a drama titled Coming Home (or Homecoming or Return, depending on who you ask). Inspired by Yan Geling‘s The Criminal Lu Yanshi, the story spans an epic stretch from the 1920’s to the 1990’s, following a husband’s (Chen Daoming) extended separation from his family (notably his wife, played by Gong Li) and his eventual return.
This first teaser reveals just a few glimpses at a handful of scenes, but those thinking that it will be a smaller family drama might be mistaken. We recently got word that it’ll be showing in 4K IMAX in China when it premieres there at the end of May. Sony Pictures Classics has the U.S. distribution rights for the film, so hopefully we’ll see it by the end of the year, ahead of an expected Cannes Film Festival bow. Check out the teaser below, along with an early poster, for the film from director behind House of Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, and most recently, Flowers of War.
What do you think of the first look?
