Movie fans were curious as hell about the Martin Campbell-directed, Ryan Reynolds-starring adaptation of Green Lantern, based on the venerable – if less-hyped – DC Comics character… until the first trailer of the summer 2011 release cooled a lot of that ardor.
Still, veteran helmer Campbell is responsible for re-booting the James Bond franchise twice (having directed both GoldenEye and Casino Royale), and should not be underestimated. So let’s see some new images of the CGI-only Green Lantern Corps fish-like bird-thing, Tomar-Re. Here’s the major frame from the trailer:
And a new image, from /Film (via CBM):
What exactly is Tomar-Re, and how does it fit in with the Green Lantern saga, you ask? Well, here’s something of an answer (and maybe a spoiler – this is a summary of the comic book character, so read at your own fan-boy risk):
Tomar was a scientist on the planet Xudar before joining the Green Lantern Corps. He became a pivotal member of the Corps, training new members, like Arisia, and serving in the Honor Guard. He investigated reports of abuses of power by Sinestro on Korugar. He was close friends with Abin Sur, Green Lantern of neighboring sector 2814. He was also the first Lantern to meet Sur’s replacement, Hal Jordan, and the two got along equally well. In the Post-Crisis timeline, that friendship is deepened further in that the rookie Jordan met him soon after being recruited. Jordan was brought to him by his power ring to help with his difficulties with handling the weapon and Tomar-Re not only guided the Terran to GLC headquarters for the optional training program, but also provided valuable emotional support during this difficult time.
As I’m relatively indifferent to the whole Green Lantern thing (I never fully understood what the hell this character was all about), I’m neutral to this budding franchise. The trailer’s CGI looked a little hokey, but there seems to be a light-hearted vibe to the movie that promises a fun – if vapid – popcorn flick.
What do you think of these new images? Do you have any idea what Tomar-Re is and could you fill us in?
