The Apu Trilogy (Satyajit Ray)
Although it premiered 60 years ago this week at the Museum of Modern Art, Satyajit Ray‘s Pather Panchali remains among both the most accomplished of debuts and cinema’s most universally relatable experiences. Accentuating the basics of human emotions to result in the most complex of reactions, Ray’s subsequent trilogy of films follows the hardships of a Bengali boy as he passes into adulthood, a delicately powerful tale of transition that’s now been gloriously restored. – Jordan R. (full feature)
The City of Lost Children (Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro)
Thankfully, at least one Jean-Pierre Jeunet feature is getting a proper release this year. After The Weinstein Company dumped his latest film, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have released his collaboration with Marc Caro, the inventive, entertaining adventure film The City of Lost Children on Blu-ray. Led by Ron Perlman, Daniel Emilfork, Dominique Pinon, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, and Judith Vittet, it features commentary with Jeunet and Perlman, as well as a making of documentary, and more. – Jordan R.
The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Either the ideal holiday pick-up for a Miyazaki fan or the perfect gift for an introduction, this epic set includes his directorial catalogue: Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and The Wind Rises. Also includes is his 1972 pilot Yuki’s Sun and his three episodes of Little Samurai, as well as, to sadly cap things off, his uncut “retirement” press conference. – Jordan R.
Faust (F.W. Murnau)
Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray release of F.W. Murnau‘s silent film masterpiece Faust, starring Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh, The Blue Angel) in one of his finest performances. Considered one of the crowning achievements of German silent film, Murnau’s adaptation of the Goethe play about a young alchemist’s pact with a devil is an epic, visually sumptuous production that harnessed the full resources of Germany’s Ufa Studios to create an unforgettable cinematic experience. This Kino Classics Blu-ray edition contains the meticulous restoration of the original German release version of the film, as well as a DVD of the lengthier alternate cut prepared by Ufa Studios in 1930. – Kino Lorber
