While is he busy producing low-budget horror films and taking supporting roles in films from Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth has’t actually stepped behind the camera to direct a feature film since 2007’s Hostel: Part II. That will change soon, as a new project is now on the Cannes marketplace.
THR reports on the project, titled The Green Inferno. Details are sparse as these things usually are, but it will be a horror/thriller set in Peru and Chili and written by Guillermo Amoedo, who recently collaborated with Roth on the earthquake horror film Aftershock (check out stills from that here, for the film also starring Selena Gomez).
As for his return to directing, Roth said, “I’ve had an amazing few years producing, writing and acting, and am very excited to get back in the director’s chair. I’ve been working on this idea for several years, and was inspired by filming in Chili and cannot wait to get back. Worldview [the production company] backs my vision and believe in me, and is giving me the support I need and the freedom to take risks and make something daring and terrifying.”
I’ve grown a little sick of Roth’s shtick, especially the high, needless gore level of his last few films, but hopefully he has some more tricks up his sleeve for this project. With production looking to gear up this fall, look for more details soon.
