In one of the richest pitch sales of the year, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films have paid $3.5 million for Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Bill Marsilii’s epic space adventure Light Speed.

The two writers previously worked together on Deja Vu, a film starring Denzel Washington that earned $180 million worldwide. Rossio’s long standing relationship with Walt Disney and Bruckheimer in the Pirates trilogy and the National Treasure films justifies why they would be willing to pay for a space adventure film. Afterall those films are some of the biggest box office hits for both studios.

Variety has published a short synopsis for the film:

Light Speed centers on a young pilot who makes the Earth Interstellar Racing Team and must take his ship on a perilous journey across the galaxy on the brink of war.

The report has come with the suggestion that Light Speed will be joining the 3D bandwagon, and Bruckheimer’s intention that it be a live-action film. There is no explicit mention of Jerry Bruckheimer being the director for the film, but it seems more than likely given that his studio paid for the rights along with Disney.

It doesn’t sound like much at the moment but it seems likely that Light Speed could be another trilogy (or more) in the making. Hopefully the creativity of these writers will give us hope to be excited for this film, but with little information available it is hard to tell yet whether Light Speed will be an enjoyable and worthy film to go and see.
