New York, NY (September 30, 2010) – Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the critically acclaimed documentary, Restrepo, makes its way to Blu-ray and DVD this December.  Directed by Tim Hetherington and award-winning journalist and best-selling author, Sebastian Junger (WAR, The Perfect Storm), the film has been revered nationwide as an intense study on modern warfare.  The film took audiences and critics through “a riveting journey into combat” (New York Magazine) while filmmakers followed the deployment of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley during the course of twelve months.

Heralded as, One of the boldest, most personal, and closest-to-the-action war documentaries you’re likely to see” by GetTheBigPicture.net, Virgil Films & Entertainment has teamed up with National Geographic Entertainment to present the DVD and Blu-ray disc premiere of Restrepo on December 7th for a suggested retail of $19.99 and $34.99 respectively.

Without political agenda, Hetherington and Junger capture the daily activities of American soldiers deployed at ‘Outpost Restrepo’, a location named after a fellow soldier who was killed during battle.  Set in one of Afghanistan’s most dangerous valleys, viewers are presented with a raw portrait interspersed with up-close encounters between the comrades.  From their playful antics -down to their heartbreaking moments of silence, Restrepo bares it all.  As noted by The Wall Street Journal, this film “…will stir your heart and open your mind.”

Bonus Features on DVD and BD formats include: Extended and deleted scenes; Extended interviews; an Update on the soldiers of 2nd Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne; and much more.

Synopsis – Restrepo

Directed by renowned author Sebastian Junger (the 1997 bestseller The Perfect Storm) and famed photographer Tim Hetherington, Restrepo is a feature-length documentary about the deployment of a troop of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, considered at the time to be one of the deadliest deployments in that country’s war. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, named “OP Restrepo” after a platoon medic who was killed in action. Restrepo is an entirely experiential film—the cameras never leave the dangerous valley, there are no talking head interviews with generals or diplomats, and there is no moral or political analysis. The only goal is to make viewers feel like as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment. Restrepo is a film about war—the conclusions are up to you.
