And the late career shift of Clint Eastwood continues, this time to a place no one could have predicted. Eastwood is set to direct Beyonce Knowles in a musical remake of A Star Is Born, from a script by Will Fetters (Remember Me, The Lucky One), for Warner Brothers.

This is the fourth incarnation of the film, the most famous the 1954 George Cukor version starring Judy Garland and James Mason, which was followed by the less-impressive 1976 Frank Pierson version starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. It tells the story of a fading male star who becomes to determined to help a young singer-starlet find fame in the film business. As her star rises, his continues to fall while his alcoholism does the opposite.

Knowles’ male counterpart has yet to be decided on/announced, with names ranging from Will Smith to Jon Hamm in people’s ears. WB hopes to start production this fall. [Deadline]

While Eastwood’s Hereafter met mixed reviews and middled box-office receipts, his continual directorial reinvention is nothing to scoff at.
