Rodrigo Cortes‘ Buried is a film that earned festival buzz very early in the year and managed to maintain that positive buzz all the way until its fall theatrical release. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but it has greatly increased Ryan Reynolds‘ profile and introduced Cortes as an exciting and experimental filmmaker. It goes without saying, then, that his next project will be highly anticipated.
The new report from The Playlist should increase the hype around Cortes‘ next film. It is titled Red Lights, and we now know that Inception‘s Cillian Murphy has joined a cast that already includes Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver. The premise, included below, should have a few more locations than Buried:
The film will follow a psychologist (Weaver) and her assistant whose study of paranormal activity leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (De Niro). The psychologist attempts to debunk the psychic’s work after he steps back into the limelight after 30 years.
Murphy‘s role isn’t yet known, but we can be sure that the film will start shooting in February in both Spain and Canada. From the look of it, this appears to be a pretty high profile follow-up for Cortes, and I hope he delivers. Buried showcased his talents with a minimal storyline, though I’m sure Red Lights will deliver a very different experience.
