Kicking off the awards season this year is the nominations for the 2014 Gotham Independent Film Awards, often including a slate of features much more compelling than what The Academy offers up. This year, as one might expect, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood led the pack, picking up nods for Best Feature, Actor, Actress, and Breakthrough Actor. Meanwhile, Birdman, Dear White People, Nightcrawler, and Under the Skin all picked up a pair of nominations.
While it’s currently under embargo until its AFI Fest premiere, A Most Violent Year grabbed a nod for Oscar Isaac’s performance. In terms of welcome nods, the overlooked Coherence was recognized in the Breakthrough Director category, while the forthcoming Actress and Manakamana were alongside Citizenfour, Life Itself, and Point and Shoot in the Best Documentary category. Surprisingly Wes Anderson‘s The Grand Budapest Hotel only picked up one nod for Best Feature and the lack of Listen Up Philip is sorely disappointing.
