Actor and writer Bill Hader has employed his love for the craft of filmmaking throughout his career. Frequent references to classic features and film tropes appear in his penned episodes of South Park and the actor even took a stab at portraying There Will Be Blood‘s Daniel Plainview on Saturday Night Live.

The first insight into Hader’s love of cinema came with his trip to the Criterion vaults a few years back. He selected titles like Fellini‘s Amarcord and Obayashi‘s House (he also donned a t-shirt from the film). Here, he deemed Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom a great date movie. Next, Hader found residency at Turner Classic Movies hosting a popular series known as Essentials Jr. His selections included canon comedy titles from Chaplin to Hawks but also championed lesser known works like the terrific comedy Ruggles of Red Gap starring Charles Laughton

Hader’s most recent foray into cinema can be found in Mike Sacks‘ new book “Poking a Dead Frog: Conversations with Today’s top Comedy Writers.” The book includes segments from talents such as Mel Brooks, Amy Poehler, and Patton Oswalt. For his segment, Hader lists 200 films he has deemed essential to every comedy writer.

It’s an eclectic assortment featuring Schizopolis and Zero for ConductSifting through these titles is an interesting experience; it’s easy to see how something like Wet Hot American Summer or Waiting for Guffman have informed the larger comedy world Hader is part of, but the other featured films would be beneficial to any student of film. There are also uncontested masterpieces from Altman and Godard that don’t exactly scream funny.

Explore the full list below (via xojane) and watch Hader pick his Criterion titles. He can next be found in the upcoming indie from Craig Johnson, The Skeleton Twins with Kristen Wiig (our review), as well as The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, and a pair of Pixar titles: The Good Dinosaur and Inside Out. Get a better glimpse of his cinephilia below with list, along with a recent 2.5-hour conversation on Kevin Pollak‘s show.
