Wait, what? Director Baz Luhrmann, who is adapting arguably the greatest piece of literature of the 20th century, is considering doing the film 3D. F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s legendary high-school English unit The Great Gatsby has garnered a lot of attention, particularly in the names it has drawn, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire, and now it is drawing attention for this. According to THR [via ThePlaylist] Luhrmann has workshopped the project in 3D but has not made a decision as to whether he will go through with it.

What an expensive mess. I just don’t see a purpose in exaggerating the spectacle in this movie, unless that is Luhrmann‘s plan, which could very well be the case. He has a penchant for grandiose spectacle (see Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet) and it’s certainly probable that that is the route is he is going to take with this one. If thus is the case, perhaps 3D isn’t entirely insane, although it is an enormous risk; I can see it being very out-of-place in the dialouge-driven Gatsby. We’ll let you know as soon as he decides.

Filming is slated to begin this year.

Would you rather this flick be in two or three dimensions?
