DISCLAIMER: I know that the Sinbad movie in question doesn’t involve the comedian Sinbad, but I had to post this picture. Why? Because the man starred in First Kid and Houseguest, two of my favorite flicks growing up. Much respect to the son of a preacher man.

Alright, onto the actual news; Variety has announced that Morningside Entertainment is planning on bringing Sinbad the sailor back to the big screen; they have optioned the rights to comic book series Sinbad: Rogue of Mars from Bluewater Productions and are hoping to hammer it out in time for a 2012 release. The comic, which was meant as a continuation of the classic 50’s and 70’s Sinbad movies (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger), follows the sailor as he and his trustworthy ship crew get transported to Mars in order to save a Jinn and its people from imprisonment. It’s also interesting to note that this plot was originally conceived as another Sinbad movie back in the day, but was never followed through. The potential of a cheesy 70’s “sailors vs. Martians” movie was squandered the day it never happened.

And now, Morningside hopes to make it a reality. And more over, they are hoping to get a trilogy out of it, which is no surprise since every movie that gets made already has a sequel in development before it even comes out (consider this an advance warning of Just Go With It 2), but would Sinbad and his lore really translate in 2011? I watched those movies when I was younger, and they were insanely hokey and I doubt that all the CGI and 3D post-conversion in the world wouldn’t be able to hide that fact. I don’t know, I’m mixed on the idea.

And in case you don’t know who Sinbad the Sailor is, here’s a brief and vague description from the always reliable Wikipedia:

Sinbad the Sailor is a fictional sailor from Basrah, living during the Abbasid Caliphate – the hero of a story-cycle of Middle Eastern origin. During his voyages throughout the seas east of Africa and south of Asia, he has fantastic adventures going to magical places, meeting monsters, and encountering supernatural phenomena.

I don’t know; still seems lame to me, but what do I know? I just admitted to loving First Kid.

Are you a diehard Sinbad the Sailor fan and have been dying to see another entry in the movie series? Or are you mad that this wasn’t about the comedian? Sorry again.
