As Tom Cruise recently secured his 19th $200 million grosser with Jack Reacher last fall, he’s bound to hit the number 20 mark this spring with Universal’s sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion. Directed by Tron: Legacy‘s Joseph Kosinski we’ve already got a debut teaser, as well as an international look, but now a new action-packed theatrical trailer has arrived, likely paired with the IMAX release of Jack the Giant Slayer this week.

Set on a demolished Earth, we follow Tom Cruise as a real-life Wall-E who is gathering the last remaining vital resources from the planet. The director also told EW the basis for the film, saying, “It’s a sci-fi adventure that spans two different worlds and two different times. It’s epic in terms of its scale and scope, but it’s a character driven story with a small cast…I first came up with the concept when I moved from New York to Los Angeles. I was inspired by old sci-fi models like The Twilight Zone to find an emotional, dramatic story that would raise interesting questions and play with perspective.”

With a script from William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven) and Michael Ardnt (Star Wars: Episode VII, Toy Story 3), check out the trailer and new posters below for the film featuring a score from M83 and also starring Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo.

Synopsis:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion hits theaters on April 19th, with an exclusive IMAX run the week before.
