Though the 2009 film year will be remembered for Kathryn Bigelow’s triumph, Lone Scherfig (director of the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated An Education) was close on the coat tails, reaffirming what a truly dynamite year it was for women directors.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid producer Nina Jacobson revealed Scherfig’s next potential project, an adaptation of David Nicholl’s novel One Day that will star Anne Hathaway and Jim Strugess.

Here’s the book’s hook: “Dexter and Emma, who first meet during their graduation in 1988 and proceed to reunite one day each year for the next 20 years.” [Coming Soon]

Scherfig, Hathaway and Sturgess are all in negotiations currently. The film is being produced by Focus Features, who really needs an indie hit right about now, following a year full of Taking Woodstocks and Away We Goes.

This one could be it. After all, everybody loves When Harry Met Sally…, which, oddly enough, came out in 1989, only a year after this film begins. Hmmm.

Jim Sturgess has been on the fringes of fame for some time now and Hathaway is one of the more recently reliable actresses in Hollywood.
