For almost every actress there comes a crossroad in their respective careers: the choice of whether or not to participate in a horror film. It seems that many take the obligatory plunge and the latest example comes with Jessica Chastain, who could easily win an Oscar this year for her role in Zero Dark Thirty. Her horror film Mama lands this week and now we’ve got news of another major Hollywood actress jumping into the horror game, with one big connecting factor.

According to Variety, Mama producer Guillermo del Toro has found a potential star for his upcoming haunted house film Crimson Peak. Set to be directed by the Pacific Rim helmer, Gangster Squad and The Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone is now in early talks to lead the film scripted by del Toro and collaborator, Matthew Robbins (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Mimic).

With a new rewrite by Lucinda Coxon, plot details are scarce but it’s been described as being “very set-oriented, [and] classical,” with a modern sensibility resting at its core. This mixture will allow his film to “subvert the old rules” of what, as he puts it, are the subgenres “grand dames” — those being The Haunting, The Shining, The Exorcist, The Omen, and The Innocents. Considering del Toro is being the camera, it seems like a smart decision for Stone to sign up and I’m sure many wouldn’t mind watching her running around screaming for a few hours.

Production isn’t set until February 2014, so don’t expect this one until 2015, but those that want more from the director can see Pacific Rim this July.
