Following his lo-fi, black-and-white Nebraska, Alexander Payne will be going big for his next film…by going small. We learned last year that Matt Damon has committed to the newly revived Downsizing, described by Payne as a “difficult” and “sprawling” screenplay. It takes place in a future where humans have the ability to downsize themselves, and in doing so, require much less resources. Damon’s down-and-out character decides to do this with his wife so they can make their money go further, but problems when arise when they aren’t on the same page, so to speak.
Deadline now reports that Payne has finalized his ensemble for the film, with the previously rumored Reese Witherspoon reteaming with the director, and Alec Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Sudeikis taking supporting roles. The good news has also arrived that Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures will finance and produce the film with production not beginning until early next year. So, while we won’t see a release until likely Christmas of 2017, we’re greatly looking forward to the results.
What do you think of the ensemble?
