Anton Corbijn‘s gorgeous anti-Bond/Bourne assassin flick The American landed at the top spot this Labor Day weekend bringing in $12.96m for a $16.1m total since its Wednesday debut.

In other new releases, Robert Rodriguez‘s Machete did well coming in 3rd place with $11.3m and Nanette Burstein‘s rom-com Going The Distance landed in 5th place with $6.85m.

Inception and Despicable Me each had minuscule drops of 7.1% and 1.2% respectively. Takers also proved to be a hit for Screen Gems, as it held on to 2nd place bringing its total to $37.9m. The Last Exorcism had a heavy 62.5% drop but has made $32.47m on just a $1.8m budget.
