In a different timeline, Ruben Fleisher’s Gangster Squad would have been nearly out of cinemas by now, but alas, due to a delay and added reshoots the film is looking to be the first treat of the New Year and we’ve got the debut featurette for the film today. The film follows Brooklyn-born, Los Angeles based mob boss Mickey Cohen played by Sean Penn, while Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin head up the secret, LAPD unit determined to destroy Cohen’s world.  Complete with a few new bits of footage, this featurette brings up a few inspirations for the film including The Godfather and The Untouchables.

Last night, a private screening of the film was held in Los Angeles and according to the Twitter buzz, the new Warner Brothers crime-drama did not disappoint. Gangster Squad is reportedly packed with heavy heat, snappy dress and all in a vintage L.A with one member quoted as saying “…..it is the best gangster film since Goodfellas.” We have to wait a few weeks to see if this is justified, but if you weren’t lucky enough to have an invite to the screening, you can get a taste below for the film also starring Emma Stone, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick and more.

Gangster Squad will be released nationwide on January 11th, 2013.
