With no superhero or space adventure franchise to call their own, Universal Pictures is looking back in their history to carve out the now-mandatory Hollywood production of a cinematic universe. After Dracula Untold was a practice run for their new Universal Monsters franchise, next summer’s The Mummy is being presented as the introduction, with reboots of Frankenstein’s monster, The Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, and Bride of Frankenstein to eventually follow.

While Tom Cruise leads the film, it marks the introduction of Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll and maybe a few more surprises as Javier Bardem has already been cast as Frankenstein’s monster and Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man. Despite being involved with Star Trek, Transformers, Watchmen, and more major tentpole features, it will mark the first blockbuster Alex Kurtzman has directed, following People Like Us.

With a script by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange, Passengers) and Cruise’s bestie Christopher McQuarrie coming into help out, the first trailer has now landed, featuring planet-set thrills before selling a montage of CGI-heavy action. At first glance from the trailer, it seems like a Cruise signed on for a Mission: Impossible film with a supernatural bent, but it remains to be seen if it has that same charm.

Also starring Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance, check out the trailer below.

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
